Make Me a New Vase

Break Our Old Vase and Make Us a New Vase

I think we all run into situations where life becomes mundane. What once appeared to be new territory has become routine. Work, church, school, personal time alone, whatever you want to call it ends up becoming routine. What happens when life becomes a routine? It gets boring plain and simple. You fall into a stagnant condition and that is no fun and no good. So what am I proposing here? Asking God to break us to make us a new vase and to pour out a fresh anointing in us.

Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved. – Matthew 9:17

Jesus said that you can’t put new wine into old bottles otherwise the bottles would break and the wine would pour out. Jesus says, “but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.” I’ve come to find out that God can’t pour out new wine into us if we are broken and/or old vases. Sometimes we go about life living the same way for too long. Our prayers become repetitive, our spiritual life stagnates because we don’t seek more from God and we end up feeling empty. We feel that emptiness and so naturally we seek to fill it. But, unfortunately we go about filling it the wrong way. Whereas once we used to fill that emptiness with God, we now turn our eyes to the world. And the world is an empty place, a place without God, that gives pleasure but it’s a temporary pleasure that leads to death. The word says that the enemy came to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus Christ came to give life and give it abundantly.

Desiring the Old

I don’t know why it’s so easy for us to forget about God and His goodness in our lives. When the Israelites were freed by God from their slavery in Egypt they were freed by His mighty hand. This wasn’t a small rescue. No, God freed them with His mighty hand. God brought plagues upon Egypt and demonstrated His power. While the Israelites wandered the desert God provided them with light during the nighttime, shade in the daytime, and with food from heaven (manna). But with all this they rebelled against Him. They complained against God and His servant Moses. Had God only taken them out of Egypt to die in the desert? At least in Egypt they had beds to sleep on but in the desert they would die and be forgotten.

That’s how we are sometimes. We get to points in our lives where we grow tired. We’ve let life become a routine that has bored us and caused us frustration and stress. Due to the frustration and emptiness we look elsewhere besides God to fill that void. Like the Israelites we forget about the great things God has done in our lives and we yearn to go back to our spiritual Egypt. But that’s not who we are.

Thinking Man, Dark, Revival in Christ

We Don’t Draw Back

But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul. – Hebrews 10:39

It’s important that we ask God to break us. That’s not an easy prayer. It’s easy to ask God for blessings, but how many of us can ask God to break us? Some of our vases have grown old and God can’t deposit any new wine in them. We need to ask God to break us and with that comes pain. It’s easy to talk about God breaking us, but it’s another thing to actually want it and to seek it. If life has become routine for us, if we feel stagnant, if we’ve let worldly things come into our lives, it’s time to ask God to break us. I have caught myself asking God, “Give me this, give me that.” But, then I thought to myself, “How can God give me something new if my vase hasn’t been changed?” I’m still doing the same things, I haven’t grown, and my spiritual life has suffered.

To ask God to break us is a heavy prayer that even I get nervous about asking him for. But, I know it’s necessary because just like Jesus was broken and suffered the cross, how do we expect to have it any other way? When we look at the Gospel we see violence. Sometimes we’d like to push things under the rug and act like it’s not necessary; Holiness, leaving sin, prayer, fasting, reading the Word, obedience. All these things are crucial to our spiritual lives. I’m the first one to say that I’m not perfect and haven’t always done things the proper way. But I think today is a good day to first and foremost recognize our shortcomings before God. I don’t know your circumstances but we can examine ourselves and also ask God to examine us. If you’ve failed God, if you’ve sinned before God, if you’ve been neglecting your relationship with God, today is a good day to recognize all that and to come before Christ.

God Awaits Us With Open Arms

God is always waiting for us with open arms even if it’s hard to believe. Visualize Christ on the cross with His arms wide open taking the punishment for our sins. The Bible says that He loved us before we loved Him. His arms were open and are open to this day to receive us. Whatever your circumstances are don’t fear or be dismayed, God loves you and wants to have a relationship with you. Let’s ask God today, you and I, to break our vases and to make us new again. That way He can finally deposit new wine into us and we can be filled with His precious Holy Spirit.
