God is Still Working

What’s up! I hope you’re having a great day. I had a rushed morning but thankfully made it to work on time. I didn’t get a chance to pray before getting my day started, which is a bad habit I need to fix, but I did find a moment to pray. I know there’s more to our Christian life that goes beyond the prayer, but I think prayer is essential in our lives. I’ve heard preachers say that when they ask a Christian that used to be on fire for God what happened, they say they stopped praying. So for me prayer, whether it’s for five minutes to an hour, is one thing I’ve always tried to maintain. Never stop praying. Never cut off your communication with God regardless of what you’re going through.

Disconnecting Ourselves Leaves us Empty

This morning I was reflecting on God’s word and remembering some of the recent preaching from church. Each day, each sermon, each visit to church is a reminder that God is still with us. These are my personal experiences but I think I can generalize because I’m sure most of us as humans go through these ebbs and flows. Even though God is constantly reminding us of His faithfulness we somehow turn a deaf ear. The preacher will be giving a fiery sermon but nothing happens. We leave church the same way we came in. It’s happened to me countless times.

Oftentimes, however, this also results from our disconnect with God. We’ve given way to worldly things in our life and have given them priority over God. This has undoubtedly proven to be detrimental in our spiritual lives. I’ve experienced it firsthand. Giving way to outside distractions feeds our flesh but consequently makes our spiritual desires wane. I don’t think it’s bad to have hobbies or pastimes. I think Ecclesiastes rings true here when it says, “There’s a time for everything.” But taking God way from first place in our lives will eventually leave a void in our hearts.

There is Hope

Although disconnecting ourselves from God hurts and in the long run leaves us feeling empty inside, there is hope. The Bible says that while there is breath in us there is hope. Not only that but you also have the plethora of promises that God has made us. Promises from a faithful, honest God. The only thing we need to do is to believe. Like I mentioned in the beginning; if you’re reading this it’s because your clearly alive and breathing. That’s our hope! God remembered you and me this morning and if we base our life on what the word says it means that we have hope. The devil whispers in our ear and attacks our mind by saying; “God is done with you. There is no hope.” But, God reminds us that there is hope and while the devil came to steal, kill, and destroy, Jesus came to give abundant life.

The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. – John 10:10

Today, right now, is as good a day as ever to take hold of God’s promises. Yesterday may not have been your day. Today you might have a giant standing in front of you; problems, fears, sins, etc. But, regardless of what you’re going through God is still with you. Believing in Him is the first step in getting up and facing those giants. David believed His God was greater than Goliath. He took his belief in God and challenged a giant that all of Israel (including the king) feared. David faced the giant and defeated him. But of course it wasn’t him, it was God that was moving through him that took down the menacing giant.

What am I trying to say? That belief in God is the first step in getting up and facing our problems head on. But, belief in God should lead us to act in faith knowing that we have a great God. Sometimes we place God inside a box. Somehow we minimize God’s greatness and categorize Him as someone small that we pray to on occasion and sing worship songs to a few days a week. But deep down we know that God is so much more! God is the essence of our lives. God has worked miracles in our lives. God is the creator of the heavens and earth. He’s everything!

Life has ebbs and flows, peaks and valleys. But looking back on recent sermons I realize that when we feel like God isn’t working He actually is. The Bible says that God’s word never comes back empty. When you’re listening to a fiery sermon but don’t see a change, trust God. If God already promised you and I that He’ll perfect the good work that He started in us we have to believe Him. There’s moments where our faith wanes and our desires for God diminish. But, those are precisely the moments where we have to connect ourselves and seek Him. God is not done! Don’t stop praying, don’t stop reading His word, don’t stop attending church. Remember that Jesus told His disciples that if they had faith the size of a mustard seed they’d tell that mountain to move and it would move. Let’s have faith today because God is good!

And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. – Matthew 17:20
