But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. – Matthew 6:33
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. – Joshua 1:8
These are a couple of verses that are really inspiring. They’re inspiring and uplifting in many ways. But today I want to focus on them being inspiring in regards to seeking success. I think we all want to be successful. What success means to me, however, might be different than what success means to you. But, regardless we all have that itch to want to experience more.
One thing that clearly comes to mind is that God wants us to focus on Him first. Before He mentions things being added unto you in Matthew 6:33, He says, “Seek first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness.” Before He says you’ll make your way prosperous, He says that the book of the law shall not depart your mouth and you will meditate on it day and night.
Had God placed success at the front of the verse then maybe we could be looking for the addition first. But before God talks to us about obtaining success and prosperity, He tells us the key. Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and two, meditate on His word day and night.
Making it a Habit to Make More Time for God
I think it’s important we make it a habit to get closer to God. Even if you find reading the word tiring and praying too hard to get into, just do it. Make the effort to seek Him more and God always does the rest. It reminds me of what my Pastor once said. Sometimes we come to church and we don’t receive anything. Why? Because throughout the week we’ve given more attention to the flesh and neglected the spirit. That’s why we find it so hard to read and pray sometimes because we’ve neglected our spiritual life.
The Bible says that His word never comes back empty. Farmers look towards the rain with optimism because they know it will result in the growth of their crops. When we read the word we should look at it with optimism knowing that just like the rain brings growth to the earth, God’s word will not come back empty but will bring growth to our lives.
Let’s make an effort to give more attention to our spiritual lives. Perhaps right now you find YouTube videos more enticing than reading a chapter of the Bible. Maybe watching a sport seems more fun than praying. It’s ok to do these activities but we have to make God our priority. I’m not perfect, as I’ve mentioned many times before, but over time you understand that some things just don’t fulfill you.
Conclusion
Remember that God isn’t religion but rather a relationship. When we start focusing on God as a Father and someone we can commune with, things start flowing better. Instead of looking at the word as a set of rules, you can look at it as instructions from your Father to live a better life. Success will come because the Bible says that we are children of a King. All the gold and silver in the world belongs to the Lord. You and your house will serve the Lord. But first thing is first and that’s to seek God and His righteousness and to meditate on His word day and night.
