Fear is a common emotion. We could be fearful of problems or people. But even though fear is common, it doesn’t mean we have to be controlled by it. In 2 Timothy 1:7 it says that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.
When we look at the story of David vs. Goliath we see a tremendous giant terrorizing a whole nation. God’s people, the Israelite’s, and their king were all fearful of the giant. Here was Goliath that stood over ten feet tall who day and night launched insults at them and God. He’d only stop if someone from Israel came down to fight him. If they won, he said, than him and the Philistines would become their servants. But if Goliath won, then all of Israel would become his servants.
This threat paralyzed God’s people. It brought fear into the hearts and minds of Israel. Even the king, a position of authority and power, was scared and hid from the giant. But it was a young boy by the name of David that dared to stand up to the giant. Not because he was big and mighty himself, but because he knew who His God was.
David’s confidence was not on men or the king. David’s eyes were on God and he knew that his God was greater than the giant. That’s the mentality and attitude that God wants us to adopt because He hasn’t changed. The same God of yesterday is the same God of today and forever. If your fears look great, remember that God is greater. And just like God gave the victory to David that day, today he able and willing to give you the victory. Better yet, if you want good news, the victory is already ours.
More than 2,000 years ago Jesus Christ shed His blood on the cross of Calvary. When Christ died and rose on the third day it effectively ended the devil’s reign over humanity. Death, sin, and fear no longer had power over our lives because the chains had been broken. The same blood that was shed on that cross is still flowing today. The same victory that was achieved on that day is still conquering to this day. So don’t fear. Place your confidence and trust in God because He has conquered.
