I love the opening verses of John because it gives us a real description of Jesus’ deity. This is just not some other man. This is God in the flesh. The creator of heaven and earth, of you and me, the unlimited, eternal God, encapsulated in a human body. That’s powerful. It says that the life (Jesus) was the light of men. Jesus is the light that illuminates us. Jesus is the light that shines in the darkness and gives us a clear path.
He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. – John 1:10-11
It says that the light that illuminates men, came into the world but the world received Him not. It’s like coming home but your family member that opens up the door says they don’t know you. Everybody inside the house says they don’t know you. Imagine being rejected by your own family and loved ones. That’s how Jesus was treated when He came into the world. But yet, His love overcame.
We all feel lost at times. We might feel directionless and purposeless. But the light of God came to shine light in our darkness. It’s a light that is available to all men and women. God doesn’t discriminate. He doesn’t care about your age, height, weight, ethnicity, social status, economic status, none of that. What God cares about is your heart and your disposition to want the help and guidance He wants to give you.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. – John 1:12-13
There’s two types of human beings; created beings and those that are children of God. We’re all created beings, but not all of us are children of God. The Bible says that those that received Him, He gave them power to become children of God. Everyone was born through a physical birth, but those that receive Jesus are born in the Spirit. When we have God in our lives, we have the light that shines in the darkness. This means we no longer walk directionless or without purpose, but now we understand that we do have a purpose and a direction we’re headed in.
