This past Saturday we had our event “Agape” with our youth. It was a lot of fun and more than anything we could focus on why we were there; to learn about the love of God. Wikipedia’s definition of the term agape is the following; “Agape is a Greco-Christian term referring to love, “the highest form of love, charity” and “the love of God for man and of man for God.” Agape isn’t the love you have for your neighbor, your husband or wife, or your kids. Agape is the unconditional love of God. It doesn’t ask for anything in return, it simply gives you the highest form of love.

But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the [a]greatest of these is love. – 1 Corinthians 13:13

God’s love doesn’t compare to anything else. His love finds you and me at our weakest moment. He lifts us up and gives us hope. The world could cast aside and consider you trash, but God extends His hand to raise you up. You’re valuable to God. Like my Pastor says, “God put his hands in the mud to take you out from where the devil had you.”

God’s Expression of Love

I love the song, “Reckless Love,” because it talks about the great lengths God goes to, to demonstrate His love for us. The Bible says that we were created in God’s image and likeness. Our nature is sinful, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that there is a void in our hearts that only God can fill. We were created to have a relationship with God, but because we’re fallen, we look for other places to fill that void.

Jesus came down to fill that void. We can get so caught up looking for love in all the wrong places that we forget God is right there. But God is good. He’s a good friend, a good Savior, a good refuge, a good Father. He doesn’t leave us alone in our times of need. He’s there to offer a helping hand. His promises are faithful and He’ll be with us all the days of our live. God is good, His mercy is everlasting, and He loves us unconditionally.

We Love Him Because He Loved Us First

There are obviously commandments that God wants us to follow. Don’t steal, don’t murder, don’t lie. He also commands us to preach the Gospel, to love our neighbor, and to seek Him with all our heart. But these commands are not meant to be heavy. On the contrary, when we love God, obeying Him becomes easier. It’s not meant to be a burden, but our obedience to God should be a direct result of our love for God.

God doesn’t want us to love Him by force. He created every single one of us with a free will. When we come to realize what God did for us on the cross, there’s no other option but to feel a sense of gratitude. We love God because He loved us first.
