Nobody likes adverse situations. They bring us out of our comfort zone and usually fill us with stress, frustrations, and worry. But adversity is essential in life. It’s essential for us as Christians because through adversity our faith grows. Maintaining our faith in adversity can be difficult, but it’s not impossible. God wants us to become resilient through the adverse situations we encounter in life.
And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God. – Luke 18:27
I was at my first drill with the National Guard this past Saturday and our counselor was giving us information on how to detect and help prevent suicides. Talk of suicide and depression was depressing to say the least. But at some point he started talking about resilience and how resilience is developed through how we react to setbacks in life. This started to fill me with a sense of hope because this is what God wants us to develop; resilience.
But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses, – 2 Corinthians 6:4
There can be no resilience without adversity. Without problems and adverse situations, we would never be able to become resilient people. But because the world is imperfect we oftentimes find ourselves in difficult situations. These are the moments where we have to remember who our God is. David found himself in a difficult situation when he faced Goliath. But instead of feeling conquered, he rose up and faced adversity. David maintained his faith in adversity.
Today God wants us to be like David and the great men and women of the Bible. These people faced adversity but they overcame with God’s help. We serve the same God that helped them overcome. We can’t allow adversity to make us feel weak and fearful. And even if we do feel this way, we have to remember that our God is greater and that He gives us the victory in adversity.
In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ; – 1 Peter 1:6-7
