Jesus is the Reason We Rejoice

Hello everyone and Merry Christmas. I hope everyone is having a great Holiday season with their loved ones. It’s been a tumultuous year, but there is plenty to be thankful for. For many of us, including myself, 2020 is far from we expected when we entered the new year. But if 2020 has taught us anything it’s that God continues to be faithful. The God of yesterday is the God of today and tomorrow. That is why Jesus is the reason we rejoice.

There’s a powerful thing I learned earlier this month. It’s something that encouraged me greatly and injected me with faith and hope. A Chaplain said something along these lines; when you don’t know why you’re going through something or what is going on, you have to hold on to the things you do know. When I heard this I was going through a lot of doubt in my life. I asked myself and God if I had made the right decisions in life. When I heard this word, it instantly brought peace to my heart.

This teaching can help us all. We all go through difficult moments and experience doubt in life. Sometimes we can’t find the answers to questions that fill our hearts and minds. But Jesus always arrives on time. In times of uncertainty we have to hold on to the things we do know. I don’t know where God is taking us, but I do know God’s promises that are found in the Bible. I know that God is good and that His mercy is everlasting. I know that He has good plans for my life and that He promised to be with me all the days of my life.

There are so many promises in the Bible that we can hold on to in times of uncertainty. But the greatest truth of them all is Jesus Christ Himself. More than 2,000 years ago a Savior was born unto us. The hymn “Amazing Grace” comes to mind. “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound. That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I’m found. Was blind, but now I see.” Jesus came into this world to save us. The light of God entered the darkness to illuminate men and to save that which was lost.

Christmas is a time to reflect on this free gift of salvation. The way John the Baptist describes Jesus lets us know how much God loves us; “The next day he saw Jesus coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world (John 1:29).” Jesus was the sacrifice that God send in order to pay the debt that we were in. Without the shedding of blood, the Bible says in Hebrews 9:22, there can be no remission of sins. Without Jesus we have no hope. Without Jesus, we have no life.

2020 has been a rough year. But no matter how dark the times get, the light of God continues to shine. During this time of the year Christmas lights adorn homes, buildings, and streets. During the day it’s difficult to appreciate their beauty. But when the night comes, the lights shine brightly and their beauty can be appreciated. That’s how Jesus is. The light of God shines most brightly in our darkest moments. When all hope seems lost, there is where we can encounter the beauty of Christ and the hope that He offers us.

Merry Christmas once again. I hope that on this day you can be reminded of the great love that God has for you. Never forget that God paid a great price for you because He loves you. Think about everything He endured at the cross; the bloodshed, the mocking, the beatings, and the shaming. Jesus was willing to go through all of that because of one sole reason; you. Jesus is and Jesus will always be the reason we rejoice. The Bible says that we love Him because He loved us first (1 John 4:19).
