One of life’s greatest questions is, “What is my purpose on this earth?” It’s a question that comes to mind more often than not. It haunts us as we try to find meaning in a world so large and vast. But this question ceases to haunt us when we come to the realization that we were created by a God that gives us purpose. We weren’t born without purpose. On the contrary, before we were even in our mother’s womb, God had already established a purpose with our lives.

Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. – Jeremiah 1:5

It doesn’t matter how insignificant you might feel or how the world sees you. God sees you through different lenses. Before you were even in your mother’s womb, God says He already knew you. In other words, you already had an identity before you were presented to the world. Before you were given a name, before your parents knew you were on the way, God already knew you. Your identity is found in God and He created you with a purpose.

But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light; – 1 Peter 2:9

The world doesn’t give us our identity. We don’t even give ourselves our own identity. Our true identity comes from God and His opinion of us is the only valid opinion that matters. Why? Because He formed us before we were even born. He designed us and gave us our purpose before anyone else could form an opinion about us. This means that regardless of our past and present circumstances, God gives us our identity and purpose.

At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. – John 14:20-21

God wants us to know Him. That’s why His work didn’t stop at the cross. God gave us redemption at the cross and brought us closer to Him. But after the resurrection, Jesus said the Comforter would guide us towards all truth and righteousness. God’s intention is for us to continue to walk with Him all the days of our life. Through Him and communion with His Spirit, we come to find our purpose. He teaches us, He corrects us, He comforts us, He reminds us that we have a purpose.

We weren’t meant to wander the earth without meaning. Our life isn’t supposed to be broken up in stages of birth, work, and death. We have so much more to live for because God has created us with a purpose and that is to know Him and to share this hope with others. Once you know God, everything else becomes less meaningful. That’s not to say that we shouldn’t dedicate ourselves to things we enjoy and are passionate about. But, when you know God you come to find out that there’s nothing greater.

Making God the foundation of everything we do and live for brings meaning to our lives. Knowing our Creator and sharing this eternal hope with others gives us our life purpose and meaning. Without God we’re nothing, but with Him we can do all things. God knew us before we were even born and regardless of our circumstances, we are special to Him. God sees us through different lenses and He tells us that we have a purpose in Him.
